Fishing Report For Lower Tampa Bay

Published January 12th, 2010 by Capt Jason Prieto

What a great time of year to fish! Weather is perfect and the fish are biting. Winter bring so many options, Trout, Snook, Redfish, Grouper just to name a few. Let start with Snook. They are staging up in creeks and river as cold weather become more frequent. Live Greenbacks are by far the best bait. Also downsizing your leader and hook will help you increase your catch. I like #2 Daiichi circle hook or even going down to a #1 circle hook.

Redfish are also still hanging on the flats this month. You will find smaller fish schooled up. With Clear water a stealthy approach is mandatory. Braided line will come in handy with those long cast. Fins #15 long cast will let you make longer cast so you don’t spook the fish. Shrimp and Pinfish are great baits for Redfish!

Grouper is another great fish to target! Fishing the reefs, channel edges, and wrecks will be great places to start, working the edges and chumming with dead or live bait will work great. Remember to bring your heavy tackle. I like 20-50 lb heavy spinning gear. You don’t want to lose the big fish. Tight lines!!!!
