Blackdrum Fishing Charter in Tampa Bay Flats

Published March 28th, 2010 by Capt Jason Prieto

Well, the big black drum have continued to be the highlight for fishing in Tampa Bay this week. They are schooled up on various flats, milling around in search of different types of bait. We have also continued to see good numbers of trout caught in the lower part of Tampa Bay. My best approach has been artificial baits. I have had great success with soft plastics, especially the DOA Cal baits. Matching this with a 1/8-ounce jig head has worked every time. Redfish are also schooled up, but the clear water matched with low tides has made it difficult to get close enough to cast without spooking them. If you can get close enough, using cut pinfish has been the go-to bait. Sheepshead has also been a good targeted species as they invade Tampa Bay's wrecks and artificial reefs during their spawn. Fishing is good, so the next step is to get out on the water! Tight lines.
