2016 is here and it’s already starting off good. We finished the year off here in Tampa Florida with stellar weather that reached record high temperatures of 80 degrees. This was shocking, even for a local guy like myself. I have spent my entire life living in Tampa, Florida and can’t remember warm weather like this. With warm weather and great flats fishing right here in Florida you can bet that everyone for 2016 will be booking early for spring and Tarpon fishing in Tampa Bay.
Spring for 2016 should be full of great fishing. One of our most sought after fish to target when fishing the flats in Tampa Florida would have to be Snook. Snook fishing is just about as good as it gets. During the spring months these tropical fish make their way out from the 4 major rivers that they seek refuge for the winter. Targeting Snook in the spring is some great fishing as they are very hungry and aggressive. Those of you that have never heard of Snook they are a lot like a largemouth bass but bigger and stronger. Snook are very protected as they are one of most sought after fish in Tampa and many other tropical destinations in Florida. In January of 2016 the Florida Wildlife Commission will be having a Snook symposium in which I will be attending to talk about the future of the species and to look at the current numbers of fish. One great thing about Florida is the state does a great job managing all of our fisheries.
Tarpon A.K.A the Silver King will also start making their migration up the coast and make their stop in Tampa from April through July with prime season being May and June. People come from all over the world to take their chances fishing Tampa Bay for Tarpon. During this time frame your chances are pretty high as there are thousands of fish roaming the beaches, passes and bridges in Tampa Florida. It’s like no other fish in the world and pound for pound they are the best fighting fish. If you have interest in Tarpon fishing don’t wait as spots fill fast so get your trip booked to ensure the date of your choice.
While visiting the Tampa Bay area you can mix in a number of activities with your fishing trip. St Petersburg offers some of the nation’s most sought after beaches. Blue sky, white sand and beautiful green water. If the beaches are not for you don’t forget to enjoy some dining places such as Ocean Prime in Tampa, or the Columbia Restaurant which is located in the areas in Ybor city. So much to do and right here in Tampa Bay so get your trip booked for 2016.
